The Erlkönig statue standing near the river Saale between Jena and Kunitz is evocative of the legend of the Erlkönig which is set in that place according to tradition. It became well-known through the poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The stone statue founded by Wolf von Tümpling and created by Otto Späte at the end of the 19th century represents the king named the Erlkönig, stretching out his hand over the pond below Thalstein castle.
